The
vineyards
A
good foundation - the terroir
|
|
The
vineyards around Tattendorf produce grapes of outstanding
quality.
The
grapes can ripen in ideal conditions thanks to teh mild
climate, the wide expanses of plain to the south and the
protection of the Vienna Woods to the west. The permeable
gravel and lime soil provide the crop with the minerals
taht give the wine ist unmistakable aromatic, versatility
and finesse.
The
vines are tended with the utmost care, the ground watered
as often as is necessary and the grapes harvested at naturally
full ripeness.

|
Wine
growing in Tattendorf has a history dating back to the
Romans.
The
wine from Johanneshof Reinisch is a living example of
this long tradition.

Terroir,
varietal and vintage, balanced by the touch of the winemaker,
produce outstanding wines at JR.
|
|
The
65 acres of JR vineyards are covered with compost after
each crop is harversted, to return organic matter into the
living soil, and a permanent cover crop of sweet grasses
and clover is meticulously maintained. Strict pruning prepares
the vines for a balanced start to the new season; and the
"green harvest", or fruit thinning in early Summer,
focuses the vines' energy on the best grapes. Extremely
high vine density - up to 3,000 vines per acre - allows
for fewer grapes per vine, producing optimum quality and
concentration.
|
|
Almost
extinct
just a decade ago, and still extremley rare, St.Laurent
grapes
make one of the flagship reds at JR, which
enjoys an ardent following.
|
|
Most
of these vines are an average of thirty years old, and more
clearly transfer the complexities of the terroir to the
finished wines.
Given this ideal environment, the winemaker
must only balance these elements to achieve a polished wine
thet still reveals the unscripted impact of Mother Nature
on each vintage.

The
experienced picking crew allows JR to make wines from
hand-selected grapes, such as Reserve
